Celebrating Real Bread Week with our local bakeries!

Here in Norfolk, we’re lucky enough to have a host of bakeries which make truly tasty bread, and other delights. Starting on Monday 17th February don’t miss our fabulous choice nearby.

Nicknamed ‘FAB’ for short Flour & Bean is a Norfolk family-run bakery and coffee house business, with one of it’s branches conveniently local to us at Fakenham. All its products are baked freshly every day by a team of craft bakers, using fine flours from East Anglia and a long fermentation process. Its cafes are stocked with its bread, baked goods, cakes and savouries as well as locally-roasted coffee. FAB products are also available at Fakenham market (Thursdays)

In the lovely market town of Reepham a few miles from here is Bread Source. Named as the second-best artisan baker in Britain in the British Baker 2024 awards, with its sourdough loaf, rye bread and croissants being singled out for praise. This is just one in its long list of awards, paying testament to Bread Source’s commitment to quality.

Wellbread Bakers is a well-known bakery based in Swaffham’s Market Place, where owners Emma and Andy offer a wide range of breads, rolls, cakes and sweet treats and more, as well as sandwiches and filled rolls. There are several options for ordering afternoon tea platters, and delivery is available within a 10-mile radius.

Bakeries don’t come any more historic than Bircham Windmill Bakery, nearby in the heart of Norfolk This restored windmill, which dates back to the 1840s is currently closed for the winter, so you can’t actually pay a visit during Real Bread Week, but you can make a note to visit after April 1, when it reopens for spring and summer. The mill has been lovingly restored and still uses its original bakery, where you can see the original coal-fired oven. It sells a wide range of bread and cakes, as well as its own flour and other specialty flours. Bircham’s bread baking experience offers a chance to bake your own loaf, and the mill also hosts an annual bread festival in August.
